On October 11, I’m taking part in Calgary’s Alzheimer’s walk/run for my Dad, James (Jim/Jimmy) Sullivan, and for the people and families affected by dementia.
My dad is 77 and lives with Lewy body dementia. He spent his working life as an electrician at Suncor, and work meant everything to him. He loves hockey, golf, beer, colts cigars, AC/DC and dessert. Dementia has changed a lot, but he’s still in there. He’s still my dad.
For the past two years, my brother, my sister, and I have each helped care for our dad in different ways. We’re grateful for the love and support of his friends and our extended family, including my mom and everyone back in PEI. It’s been a journey shared by many people who care about him, and it’s shown us how much support families need—including adult children finding their way through caring for a parent.
No big expectations here. I’m simply showing up for my dad, for myself, and for an organization whose support means a lot. If sharing our story helps reduce stigma and reminds another family they’re not alone, that matters to me. Any support, whether it’s a donation or simply taking the time to learn more, is appreciated.
